But why do we need a NAS drive? This is a typical question asked by most. Well, let’s look at what we use to have, external hard drives. Their primary use was a back up medium or to increase storage capacity. But as more desktops and laptops came on to the scene and more people started to download music and take more digital pictures, more functionality was required and more sophisticated features was required.
So why not just keep with what we know, external hard drives? Simple answer, limited functionality and the majority needs to be connected directly to a PC.
So what's the answer? A Network Attached Storage device (NAS Device). These connect to a network, whether it is a home network or a company network (some are capable of joining an AD domain). They also support multiple users which is useful in a household with multiple PC's and laptops. Some Network Attached Storage devices have additional features for streaming photos, music etc, as well as being able to access them from anywhere in the world. But this is just the icing on the cake.
